Joe Zavaglia

Lead Audio Engineer / Project Manager / Technical Director

Lucky for the audio world that Brooklyn-born Joe Zavaglia realized that toiling as an HVAC technician was not his calling. In New York City, he gave the entertainment industry a shot and found himself working alongside Rick at Audio Force Pro Rentals.
After countless hours of sweat and diligence working on performances in NYC, Joe earned the distinction of being the top live engineer at Audio Force. Subsequently, Joe has collaborated with some of NYC’s premier sound companies, such as One Dream Sound, Pro Sho Productions, and Sine Audio. He was also honored by an invitation to guest lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy for a workshop titled “Breaking Apart the Turntable” – an overview of the Technics SL -1200 turntable.
By 2003 Joe’s audio skills landed him shows on the road, touring with artists the likes of Grammy award winner Adele, Gutter Twins (featuring Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan), Hoodoo Gurus, the National, Rogue Wave, Eddie Money and Portland’s own Stars of Track & Field, amongst others.
Joe moved to Portland in 2007. Between tours he kept himself busy as occasional house engineer at the Doug Fir and monitor engineer at the Wonder Ballroom. He also formed a strong relationship with Smart Tech AV and became an on-call audio engineer for Nike world headquarters.
In 2009 while on tour with John Doe & the Sadies, Joe discovered Pickathon. After mixing 3 sets over two days Joe realized what a truly unique festival Pickathon is and in 2010 returned as lead audio engineer/crew chief for the festival’s Mountain View and Fir Meadows stages. Using knowledge gained while working dozens of festivals across the globe (including Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, Leeds, Reading, Tea in the Park, Pukkelpop and Brooklyn, NY’s Siren festival) Zavaglia and crew delivered as promised. Pickathon 2010 surpassed all expectations of the festivals coordinators, artists and most importantly the fans.

Rick Sanger

Project Manager / Audio Technician / Administrative Director

A passion for audio technology was first sparked in Boston native, Rick Sanger, when he decided to major in Recording Arts at Massachusetts Communications College in 1996. After the accomplishment of his degree, the Big Apple called his name when Rick was determining the best place to launch his audio career. It was in NYC that his professional path began by working as an audio technician at Audio Force Pro Rentals, acquiring experience and insight into the world of sound.

For AFPR, Rick was providing high-end equipment rentals to all the major studios in NYC and assisting the live sound department in producing prominent events. During his time there, Rick co-produced events for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, NYC Historical Society, Fader Magazine, WPLJ, and annual holiday benefits for Blythedale Children’s Hospital, to name a few.

The next job took Rick to SST Inc. His job involved supporting tours and expanding his knowledge of audio, backline repair, stage management and logistics planning.

Rick’s career continued gaining steam in 2002, after he was offered an opportunity to tour as a guitar technician for Goldfinger. He has been touring the world ever since with eminent musicians, including: Aimee Mann, Sean Lennon, The Cult, My Morning Jacket, The Von Bondies, Pavement, The Eels and The Decemberists.

His work with the Decemberists ultimately inspired Rick to relocate in Portland, OR, where he fell in love with the city. As a hands-on Project Manager, Rick personally facilitates the production for all events.
